Be the Change

Our students learn to understand and interpret carefully designed, thoroughly conducted research experiments that help lead to breakthroughs in public health and medicine. At FIU, our faculty members work alongside the students and their peers to advance these skills in relation to biostatistical science and its application to understanding health and medical issues that impact populations.

About the Department of Biostatistics

For more than 50 years, biostatistics as a discipline and Departments of Biostatistics have been central to Public Health and specifically to Schools of Public Health. During this time, biostatisticians have contributed critically to the understanding of health and medical issues impacting our populations. They have done this by developing and implementing new strategies for using public health and medical data and by utilizing sound research methodologies to develop improved approaches to health promotion, disease prevention and clinical care.

The Department of Biostatistics is new and is building its teaching and research programs. Our core faculty members, in addition to their teaching responsibilities, have active research programs for developing new and improved biostatistical methods. They also contribute to projects focused on improved health promotion, disease prevention and approaches to clinical care. At this point, we offer an MPH degree with a specialization in Biostatistics, but we’re also working toward MS and PhD degree programs.

Biostatistics provides a good career path, especially in the face of an international shortage of biostatisticians. An MPH with a major in Biostatistics can greatly facilitate your entry into public health service, as well as public health, medical and pharmaceutical research. It also can serve as a stepping stone toward a higher degree or can facilitate career advancement for those already employed in these fields. It is a much prized addition for those with MD degrees.

Did You Know?

Right now, there’s an international shortage of biostaticians. In fact, over the next 10 years, career opportunities for statisticians will grow by a staggering 27%.
