Two important dimensions are the basis of research activities of the Department, one being the biostatistical, data management and data quality support it provides for research investigators and students across and beyond the campus, and the other being the biostatistical research undertaken by individual faculty. Some, but not all, of the research support provided to other investigators is done through the Integrated Biostatistics & Data Management Center (IBDMC), as described in individual faculty home pages.
The research issues being addressed are quite broad, ranging from simple surveys of populations to basic science and also to projects undertaken in fields such as public health, medicine, nursing, arts and sciences, religious studies, business, engineering and law. Biostatistics graduate students are involved in these activities and make important contributions.
Research done within the Department, often with student involvement, tends to focus on the development of new theory, new procedures and new applications. Work of the faculty—along with other investigators—also results in important contributions to the literature in their respective areas.
