The Department of Dietetics and Nutrition at Florida International University has a long history of dietetic education.  Since the 1970s, the Department has successfully prepared dietetic practitioners through a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) and a Coordinated Program (CP).  As part of the continuous quality improvement of our dietetics’ programs, the Department has established a Dietetic Internship (DI) Program.  Having the DI associated with a graduate degree will allow for an easier transition in the future to the model proposed by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND®) (accrediting agency for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics) for integrated knowledge and experiential learning in one program at the graduate level for entry level dietetics’ practice.

Students who meet the admissions’ criteria on the application and have completed a Didactic Program in Dietetics approved or accredited by ACEND® are eligible to apply. The DI will participate in the preselect option not in the computer matching option.

The Dietetic Internship Program does not grant credit for prior learning for any portion of the internship components. All interns must successfully complete the required courses, practica and number of supervised practice hours to receive a DI verification statement.

Once accepted, students are expected to follow the facilities (preceptor) work schedules. Some practica may require the student working a longer day or ten-hour days. Many facilities work six-seven days a week with flexible scheduling. The intern does not abide by the University calendar while enrolled in DIE 5946 Advanced Supervised Dietetics Practice I and DIE 5947 Advanced Supervised Dietetics Practice II.  There are no breaks between semesters or holidays.  In addition, students are required to be available six weeks prior to start date of practicum so that they can attend orientation and/or complete additional facility requirements.

Students are required and expected to complete all assignments and experiences in two consecutive semesters and finish the program. Successful completion of this program will result in the receipt of a DI Verification Statement which establishes eligibility to take the national exam administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). Successful completion of the exam results in the Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist (RDN) credential and eligibility to apply for state licensure in those states that provide licensure for dietitians.

MISSION

The mission of the Internship Program in Dietetics at Florida International University is to prepare competent entry-level registered dietitian/nutritionists through experiential learning and evidence-based practice who are leaders, ethically and culturally proficient. The program is committed to training qualified practitioners who provide dietetic services that promote eating and lifestyle behaviors that enhance health and quality of life.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES*

Goal 1.  Graduates will be prepared for entry-level practice as registered dietitian/nutritionists (RDN).

Objective 1.1 At least 85% of the interns will successfully complete the internship requirements within 150% (3 semesters) of the time planned for completion (2 semesters).

Objective 1.2 Over a five year period, 80% of those who successfully complete the internship program will pass the Registration Examination for Dietitians on the first attempt.

Objective 1.3 At least 85% of those who complete the internship program and graduate with a master’s degree will find employment in the field of dietetics within twelve months of graduation.

Goal 2.  The program graduates will meet expectations of employers.

Objective 2.1 In the first year of employment, at least 85% of employers will indicate they were very satisfied with the educational preparation of program alumni for entry-level practice.

Objective 2.2 At least 80% of employers will be very satisfied that program alumni have ethical judgment and decision-making.

Objective 2.3 At least 80% of employers will be very satisfied that program alumni have knowledge and awareness of peoples from other cultures.

Objective 2.4 At least 80% of employers would be very likely to hire more graduates from our program.

Goal 3.  The program graduates will demonstrate leadership in evidence-based practice.

Objective 3.1 At least 80% of those who complete the internship and pass the Registration Examination for Dietitians will incorporate evidence-based practice into their professional activities and decisions.
