Ph.D. in Public Health with a Specialization in Epidemiology

The doctoral program in Epidemiology is specially designed to train students in the highest level of professional skills to examine the conditions and determinants of health and disease in populations. The degree equips students with the knowledge and skills to apply quantitative and qualitative methods in addressing public health problems. The PhD program prepares students to become scholars who are able to conduct research and teach epidemiology.

Admissions Requirements

Application Deadline The priority application deadline for MPH and PhD with a major in Epidemiology is February 15th. Applications submitted prior to this deadline will be considered for admission first. Applications submitted after March 1st will be considered for slots that have not been filled until the University's deadline of June 1st.

Ph.D in Public Health

Specialization in Environmental and Occupational Health, Epidemiology, and Health Promotion and Disease Prevention.


Full admission into the Ph.D program requires the following:

  • Four year bachelor’s degree or equivalent from a regionally accredited institution or, in the case of foreign students, from a well established institution of higher learning that is authorized to grant degrees by appropriate authorities in that country.
  • Minimum of a 3.0 GPA in the last 60 upper division credit hours in their undergraduate coursework, or a graduate degree form an accredited institution.
  • Official GRE or GMAT scores (scores must be no more than five years old). Appropriate nationally-normed examinations are required for the Ph.D. program. The University’s goal is to select Ph.D. students whose scores are at or above the 60th percentile (e.g., 1120 combined verbal and quantitative on the GRE).
  • International applicants require official TOEFL scores.
  • A resume including both educational and professional experience.
  • Three letters of recommendation.
  • A personal statement.
  • A master’s thesis, project, or published manuscripts resulting from master’s work in which the applicant is among the first three authors (Optional)
