Graduate Certificate in Health Policy & Management


The graduate certificate in HPM seeks to provide graduate level instruction in health policy to non–graduate degree practitioners. The graduate certificate requires the completion of 15 graduate credits. The certificate provides a suitable alternative for professionals in the field of Public Health looking to further their knowledge or advance their credentials. To complete the certificate, students will be required to maintain a 3.0 GPA in the following courses:

1. PHC 6102 Introduction to Public Health Policy and Management (3 credits)

This course is designed to provide students with a basic understanding of the healthcare system with emphasis on current health policy and management issues.

2. PHC 6104 Public Health Management and Leadership (3 credits)

This course integrates theory with practice by examining management, leadership, and organizational behavior in public health organizations.

3. PHC 6155 Health Policy Analysis (3 credits)

This course provides an exploration of health policies from an economic perspective. Current issues and policy dilemmas in the areas of healthcare and public health will be analyzed.

4. PHC 6148 Strategic Planning for Healthcare Organizations (3 credits)

This course introduces students to strategic planning for healthcare organizations encouraging modern business approaches, including the planning process and using data to identify growth opportunities. Prerequisite: PHC 6102.

5a. PHC 5158 A History of United States Health Policy (3 credits)

Places contemporary health policy controversies into historical perspective by highlighting some of the major health-related issues that have drawn federal intervention during the past two centuries. Prerequisite: PHC 6102.


5b. PHC 6154 Evidence Synthesis Applied to Clinical Settings and Health Policy-Making (3 credits)

This course examines the relationship between scientific evidence and public policy in a population health context. Mechanisms for advancing evidence-based health policy are explored.

The certificate program will not require a GRE.
