Program Requirements

General Admissions Procedures and Deadlines

Applicants are responsible for ensuring all required documents are on file at the University and the School of Social Work. Applicant folders are considered complete when the School of Social Work (AHC5 576) receives the following documents:

  1. School of Social Work Application to the Master of Social Work (MSW) Program
  2. Personal Narrative Statement (6 to 8 full pages, please complete all 7 questions)
  3. Three Letters of Reference (only use School of Social Work reference form)

AND

Received by Graduate Admissions:

  1. Online Graduate Admissions Application/$30 application fee at gradschool.fiu.edu
  2. Official transcript from all institutions (except FIU)

Deadlines

The two-year MSW Program admits for Fall and Spring. Deadlines are as follows:

Fall Semester: June 1 
Spring Semester: October 1

The Advanced Standing Program admits for Fall, Spring and Summer. Applicants to the MSW advanced standing program should have a bachelor’s degree in social work from an accredited institution.

Deadlines are as follows:

Fall Semester: June 1 
Spring Semester: October 1 
Summer Semester: March 1

Requirements

Minimum Requirements for the Master of Social Work Program (MSW) are as follows:

  • 3.0 GPA in upper division coursework
  • 3.25 for Advanced Standing

Requires a minimum grade of “C” in the following:

  • Completion of a three (3) credit course in Biology with human content
  • Completion of a three (3) credit course in Statistics
  • Completion of twelve (12) credits in Social Science course (for example: Psychology, Sociology, Economics, American Government)

Testing Record

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is no longer required for admission to the MSW Program. However, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required for international applicants, unless they hold a degree from an English-speaking university (see the University catalog). Information on the TOEFL is available at toefl.org.

Advanced Standing—Fall 2014

All new students are required to see the social work advisor before registering for classes. For course descriptions, see the University Catalog at catalog.fiu.edu/.

Effective Fall 2010:

All students admitted to the MSW Program with advanced standing status must have a “B” or better from their BSSW coursework. Admitted advanced standing students with BSSW grades lower than a “B” will be required to complete the equivalent graduate courses in the first term of the MSW program.
