Certificate in Cultural Humility & the Quest for Competence


We in the United States live and work in diverse cultural environments requiring that healthcare providers, public health practitioners, social service professionals and others enhance their capacity to best serve diverse communities. The goal of this course is to build capacity in cultural humility - to be aware of our biases, privileges and perceptions toward diverse communities and to respect and build on their assets and strengths.


Learning Objectives

At completion, participants will be able to:

  • Examine health beliefs/behaviors in historical and cultural context
  • Explain the impact of racism and other forms of discrimination on human health and environments
  • Differentiate effects of lack of access to services, poverty, and other structural barriers from effects of racism and discrimination
  • Excel in building and strengthening multicultural teams and settings
  • Work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Commit to and persevere in long-term examination of self-appraisal in cultural humility
  • Identify and develop processes to eliminate disparities in health and social outcomes


  • Concepts of cultural competency vs. cultural humility
  • Understanding “privilege”
  • History of racism and social and political ethnocentrism
  • The leveling effect of poverty, and the expansion of disparities when controlling for poverty
  • Life-course theory
  • The language of tolerance and the practice of cultural humility

Course Schedule

The course has two components:

  • In person, 25 hours, Aug. 8-12, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Online, 15 hours, to be conducted prior or along with the in-person component.


At the end of this program, participants will receive a certificate of completion. Our College is accredited to provide the following Continuing Education Units (CEUs):

  • Certified Health Education Specialists - CHES
  • Certified in Public Health - CPH
  • Dietetics and Nutrition Continuing Professional Education Units - CPEU
  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker - LCSW
  • Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist - LMFT
  • Licensed Mental Health Counselor - LMHC

License professionals can receive the following CEUs after completion of this program:

CHES - 40 | CPH - 40 | CPEU - 40 | LCSW, LMFT, LMHC - 40
