Dr. Bill Darrow was a member of the CDC task force that investigated the cause of a mysterious and deadly outbreak of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) in summer 1981. He served as the Chief of the Behavioral and Prevention Research Branch for the STD/HIV Division at CDC until his retirement from civil service. As a faculty member in the Robert Stempel College of Public Health & Social Work, he teaches and mentors graduate students and continues to conduct research on the social and behavioral aspects of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. From 1999 to 2008, he was principal investigator for the innovative Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH) 2010 project that successfully reduced disparities in HIV disease in Broward County.
