Ms. Hernandez has more than ten years of experience in higher education, having dedicated many years to matters of access and funding for students of diverse backgrounds at Hispanic Serving Institutions. She began her career as an outreach coordinator and campus advisor to underrepresented students at Hanover College, a private liberal arts college in Hanover, Indiana. She then transitioned to Miami Dade College, where she served as program manager of international education, facilitating and overseeing the college’s study abroad programs. Ms. Hernandez joined FIU in 2008 as Assistant Director of the University’s Office of Study Abroad, where she served as a member of the University’s Global Learning for Global Citizenship Quality Enhancement Plan Implementation Team and later transitioned to the Director position. Most recently, Ms. Hernandez has been involved in graduate education. For the past three years, she has served as Associate Director of Academic Support Services at the FIU Graduate School where she works on the university’s doctoral program review process as well as student success initiatives and professional development programming for graduate students.
She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Writing from the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, and a Master of Arts in Political Science from the University of Connecticut. Ms. Hernandez is currently a doctoral candidate in Educational Administration at Indiana State University. She is set to graduate in December 2016. Her research interests focus on matters related to program quality and student success.
Ms. Hernandez brings the experience and expertise needed for the Director position and a strong belief in the holistic development of students at a critical time for the FIU Stempel College. I am certain that she will meet the many challenges of leading the Office of Student and Alumni Affairs. Under her leadership, the Office of Student and Alumni Affairs will set the path, ensuring that FIU Stempel College students and alumni are successful and well served.
