Dr. Maziak is Professor and Chair of the Department of Epidemiology. He is also the founder and director of the Syrian Center for Tobacco Studies (www.scts-sy.org), a pioneer research and capacity building institution in the Middle East. He has extensive experience in tobacco control research and policy, as well as the study of cardiovascular risk factors in developing countries. He has published over 120 peer reviewed scientific reports, including contributions in Science, Lancet, and British Medical Journal. He is a world leader on waterpipe (hookah) research. His work has been instrumental in putting this emerging threat to global health on the international public health radar. Dr. Maziak has been continuously funded by NIH since 2001.
