Rules & Requirements

list

Students accepting his/her assistantship agree not to accept employment outside of FIU.

Student must not accept an appointment which individually or collectively exceeds .50 FTE (working more than 20 hours a week) without PRIOR approval of the Dean of the University Graduate School. If student exceeds his/her 20 hours without prior approval from the Dean of the University Graduate School the extra hours worked will not be paid. Human Resources will detect the extra hours over the assistantship and see that there is no approval and will not process the payment for the additional hours.

(The maximum a DOMESTIC graduate assistant can work a week is an extra 10 hours. The maximum an INTERNATIONAL student can work a week is an extra 10 hours, ONLY for the SUMMER semester. If the student desires to work an additional 10 hours a week he/she must complete a petition for exception with his/her faulty supervisor then given to the Assistant Director).

  • Appointment is contingent upon full-time enrollment and satisfactory academic and work performance (3.0 GPA or higher).
  • Employment terminates on the ending date found on the contract. No further notice of cessation of employment is required. Employment may be terminated at any time if performance is unsatisfactory.
  • To keep an assistantship, a graduate assistant is required to attend 9 credits in fall and spring and 6 credits in summer (this is the same for both domestic and international students).
  • New graduate assistant is required to complete an HR sign-on package

Graduate Assistants (.50 FTE)

If the student is .50 FTE he/she is required to work 20 hours a week for fall and spring and be enrolled in no less than 9 graduate credits. If the student is a .50 FTE for summer he/she is required to work 20 hours a week and be enrolled in no less than 6 graduate credits.

All graduate assistants are required to have health insurance. Health insurance costs will automatically be deducted from the graduate assistant’s stipend unless proof of acceptable insurance is provided.

To avoid these deductions, employee must submit completed evidence of equivalent insurance by the end of the Add/Drop period in each semester. Graduate assistants wishing to demonstrate equivalent coverage should download the form to demonstrate proof of insurance. This form can be found in the University Graduate School website, gradschool.fiu.edu, then click the graduate assistant link found on the right of the page.

UGS pays 75% of the health insurance and the student pays 25%. More information on the insurance can be found here.

Graduate Assistants .25 FTE

Student that are .25 FTE work less than 20 hours a week and be enrolled in no less than 9 credits.

UGS does not pay the insurance for Graduate Assistants considered .25. More information on the insurance provided by the university can be found in: http://www.hillchesson.com/fiugrad.htm.

UGS does not cover the tuition waiver for a .25 student ; however, student pays the regular state tuition rate regardless if he/she is a domestic or an international student.

Stipends (salaries) are covered by the department project or grants.

Work Hours

Please note graduate assistants are required to work the full amount of the contract dates. Each contract is assigned a start date and an end date. If the University is closed for a holiday, the graduate assistant is required to make up those hours missed that day. If the graduate assistant is on contract during fall and spring break, the graduate assistant is required to work during that time. Recovered times and availability of the graduate assistant is an arrangement between the graduate assistant and his/her supervisor.

A graduate assistant may be dismissed at any point in the semester for failure of attendance, lack of performance or not meeting the standards of his/her supervisor. If a graduate assistant is dismissed during a semester, he/she will be required to pay for the tuition and insurance for that semester.
