Welcome to the Robert Stempel College of Public Health and Social Work and to FIU! We are delighted that you have chosen us.

On behalf of the faculty, staff, and students of the Robert Stempel College of Public Health and Social Work we welcome you as a new student to Florida International University and the college. FIU is a dynamic and rapidly growing university located in one of the most exciting cities in the world. Miami with its unique diversity and geographical location serves as a major international hub for commerce, education and travel and is the location for our university. The characteristics of the greater Miami metropolitan area help us to serve our mission of community service and engagement with focus on education, research and professional practice.

The Robert Stempel College of Public Health & Social work is unique among the nation’s accredited schools of public health in its interdisciplinary structure, which combines the five major disciplines of public health in partnership with the disciplines of dietetics and nutrition and social work. This special blend of disciplines and programs afford us the opportunity to better explore and understand the interrelatedness of social, biological, environmental and cultural determinates of health and well-being. We strive to reflect the diversity of the greater community and to maximize our understanding and effectiveness in providing cross-cultural health and mental health services in today’s heterogeneous mix of cultures and languages.

All health professions afford the opportunity to serve the greater population; dietetics & nutrition, public health and social work stand out among the health professions, since each emphasizes population health rather than focusing on individual health. Public health interventions are responsible for 80% of the increase in the lifespan Americans have enjoyed since the year 1900. The future health of the populationbe it local, national or globalis dependent on the success of our interventions as practitioners in these fields. As Dietetics and Nutrition, Public health and Social Work professionals, I encourage you to be part of this noble effort.
