- Students will need to apply and be accepted into each degree program separately in order to qualify for the combined degree program. Students will have to meet the regular admissions criteria for each program.
- Applicants must be admitted into both programs for the same term in order to proceed in the combined degree program.
The two separate admissions processes that all MSW/MPH applicants are required to complete are detailed below.

PART ONE: MSW Program
Applicants must meet the following admission criteria:
- 3.0 GPA in upper-division coursework.
- A minimum grade of “C” in the following:
- Completion of a three-credit course in Biology with human content
- Completion of a three-credit course in Statistics
- Completion of 12 credits in Social Science course (e.g., Psychology, Sociology, Economics, American Government)
- International applicants whose native language is not English are required to submit a score for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). A total score of 80 on the iBT TOEFL or a 6.5 overall on the IELTS is required.
To be considered for admission, all applicants must submit the following required application materials:
- Inform the program assistant that you are applying to the MPH/MSW combined program
- Admissions application
- Official transcripts from accredited institutions
The following documents must be completed and uploaded into the “Supporting Documents” section of your University Graduate School application:
- Admissions application to the Master of Social Work (MSW) Program—Please complete the application and upload it into the “Supporting Documents” section of your Graduate Admissions Application Center portal.
- Personal narrative statement Please complete the statement and upload it into the “Supporting Documents” section of your Graduate Admissions Application Center portal.
- Three Social Work Reference Forms Please use only this reference form. Please email the link to the reference form directly to your recommender. Recommenders must download, complete and email the form directly to Ms. Gladys Ramos at glramos@fiu.edu.
Application Deadlines:
Admissions to the MSW program is rolling. Once all required documents are submitted, an admissions decision can be made. Although the process is rolling, in order to be admitted for a particular semester, the documents must be submitted by the below dates.
- Fall Semester: June 1 for domestic applicants; February 15 for international applicants
- Spring Semester: October 1 for domestic applicants; August 1 for international applicants
PART TWO: Master of Public Health
Applicants to the MPH must meet the following admission criteria:
- Must have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university, or in the case of foreign students, an accredited institution recognized in its own country as preparing students for further study at the graduate level.
- Must have a minimum of a 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale. The GPA is calculated on the student’s last 60 credits of undergraduate upper division hours.
To be considered for admission, all applicants must submit the following required application materials:
- SOPHAS Application – http://sophas.org/
- Statement of Purpose – which should address the following: Why you have chosen this degree and what interests you about the concentration you have chosen? How will our program help you achieve your academic and career goals? (Uploaded to SOPHAS)
- Three letters of recommendation – uploaded to SOPHAS
- Resume/CV – uploaded to SOPHAS

International Applicants
In addition to the items listed above, all international applicants must submit the following:
- A course-by-course WES evaluation of your transcripts – sent to SOPHAS. See instructions here.
- Proof of English Language Proficiency—TOEFL or IELTS exam scores:
- Official TOEFL minimum scores: 550 paper-based, 80 internet-based, send to FIU SOPHAS code 5688 ( scores must be less than two (2) years old). Information about the TOEFL exam can be found here.
- Official IELTS minimum score of 6.5, send to FIU code 5206 ( scores must be less than two (2) years old).
