Q&A

Tell us something about yourself. What is your current position, the nature of the job, key responsibilities, and anything you want to share about yourself.

I am originally from Colombia, moved to the United States 21 years ago to pursue my education. Balancing full-time work with my studies, I earned a bachelor's degree in biological sciences and later a master's in public health (MPH) with environmental health sciences concentration from the Stempel College of Public Health in Florida International University (FIU). My journey as an international student was challenging, but I take immense pride in my accomplishments. Today, I am a toxicologist at the United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA), specifically within the Center for Tobacco Products in the Office of Science.

In my role, I review various tobacco products to ensure they meet scientific standards. I am a key resource for toxicological and regulatory health sciences, contributing to scientific regulation and policy. My responsibilities include innovating methods to address complex challenges, providing strategic recommendations for regulatory science programs, and evaluating regulatory program methodologies. My main objective is to support the Center for Tobacco Products' mission to prevent tobacco use initiation, reduce overall consumption, and mitigate the harmfulness and addictiveness of tobacco products.

What helped you to find your first job after graduation? What are some of the memorable experiences that contributed to your career and professional growth?

My first job after graduation was secured through proactive networking, relevant practicum experience, and tailored applications. My memorable career moments include tackling challenging projects during my practicum, seeking mentorship, and engaging in professional development opportunities at FIU and the FDA.

What attracted you to the EHS program at FIU. How did the MPH degree prepare you for the next steps in your career? Any words of wisdom for current and prospective students interested in MPH with EHS degree?

I was drawn to FIU's EHS program due to my familiarity with the school and the department's science-based approach to solving public health issues. My MPH degree was pivotal in shaping my career, enhancing my writing and communication skills, and providing a solid foundation for future opportunities. I advise current and prospective students to embrace continuous learning, seek opportunities to enhance data analysis and communication skills, and recognize the vast career paths available in public health.
