At the FIU Robert Stempel College of Public Health & Social Work in Miami, Florida, the Department of Global Health centers its work around research, policy innovation and implementation, and domestic capacity strengthening to help support people affected by today’s health challenges in the U.S. and globally.
The Department of Global Health brings together collaborators from government, academia, the private sector and beyond to provide scientific solutions to the major health problems facing the U.S. today (including chronic diseases, such as diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, and brain health disorders). The department also emphasizes a life-course approach, which involves developing tailored health solutions for children, adolescents and young adults.
To achieve this, a particular focus of this department is “glocalization”, which enables a) global scientific learning to inform local health solutions in the US, b) cross-fertilization of global knowledge and technologies to benefit US health resiliency, and c) conducting studies in global (as well as domestic) settings that can generate low-cost/high-gain health research data to inform US public health policies.
