The Master of Public Health with a concentration in Global Health trains US students to apply global health principles to both domestic and international challenges, with a focus on identifying innovative public health solutions to common major illnesses (such as chronic diseases).

The increasing interconnectedness of the world requires US professionals educated from a wider population health perspective, to enable global learnings and best practices to inform local solutions to public health challenges (such as obesity, cancer and cardiovascular disease). The program leverages a transdisciplinary approach to prepare technically skilled and competent professionals to overcome challenges in a continually-shifting and complex chronic health challenges landscape.

Graduates will be able to:

  • Analyze the impact of transnational problems (including chronic disease conditions).
  • Apply an integrative approach to find US-specific solutions to contemporary health issues.
  • Diplomatically function within and in conjunction with multi-level stakeholders in the US.
  • Thrive as interdisciplinary scientific leaders.
  • Work, communicate, and excel across both national and global settings.

Why pursue an MPH in Global Health at FIU?

  • Interdisciplinary, “Global” Approach

FIU emphasizes both global health challenges and how those translate to or from local U.S. settings — what they call “glocalization.” This means students learn to adapt ideas from around the world to local contexts, particularly in diverse South Florida and Miami.

  • Flexible Formats and Tracks
    • Accelerated Track: For strong applicants, there’s an option to complete the MPH faster (in 3-4 semesters) rather than the standard two years.
    • Part-time / full-time options: The program accommodates different student needs.
  • Robust & Relevant Curriculum
    • Covers core public health fundamentals: epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health, policy, etc.
    • Global Health concentration course topics include current global threats such as planetary health, global mental health, healthcare quality and safety, healthy aging, and one health.
    • A one-of-a-kind course led by the WHO in global health diplomacy, developed in partnership with Oxford — that’s a truly unique offering.
  • Strong Research & Partnership Opportunities
    • Global Health Fellowship: Funding available exclusively for MPH in Global Health students for their practicum projects, both nationally and internationally.
    • The Global Health department hosts FIU’s Global Health Consortium that connects major partners in Latin America, involving over 20 countries, and also links to other regions like South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. This helps with exposure, networking, research, and student fieldwork.
    • The College of Public Health hosts FIU’s Population Health Initiative, which brings together research on major global health threats (e.g., epidemics, climate, food/housing quality) at local, national, and international levels. This increases the chances for students to engage in cutting‐edge work.
    • The Global Health department also collaborates with FIU’s Institute of Environment, a comprehensive solutions center dedicated to combating environmental crises that devastate ecosystems, disrupt communities and destroy natural resources.
  • Location Advantages
    • Being in Miami offers a unique vantage point: a diverse population, many immigrant and global health linkages, proximity to Latin America and the Caribbean, which means opportunities for fieldwork and real-world experience with global health issues in a U.S. setting.
    • Access to different communities dealing with uneven health burden, chronic diseases, and extreme weather events and environmental challenges – all of which align well with the program’s mission.
  • Accreditation & Reputation
    • The Robert Stempel College of Public Health & Social Work is fully accredited by CEPH – ensuring the highest quality, credibility, and recognition.
    • FIU’s Public Health programs are highly ranked among public universities.
  • Career Relevance & Outcomes
    • Graduates are prepared for a variety of roles: in public health agencies in the U.S., academia, NGOs, policy, program implementation, and multinational companies active in international health.
    • Training is intended to build “cross-culturally competent” skills, which are increasingly in demand.
