FIU public health graduate program jumps 7 spots in U.S. News & World Report Rankings

The public health graduate program at the FIU Robert Stempel College of Public Health & Social Work continues to rank among the nation’s top 50 public health programs at public universities, rising 7 spots to No. 35, according to the U.S. News & World Report 2024-2025 rankings. The program now ranks No. 59 among 213 public health schools and programs overall in the nation.

In 2019, U.S. News & World Report ranked Stempel College’s public health program for the first time in the college’s history. The public health graduate program moved from the honorable mention category in 2015–the last time the magazine ranked schools of public health across the nation–to 50th among public universities.

“I am incredibly proud of our students, faculty and staff who truly are the backbone of our public health graduate program,” says Tomás R. Guilarte, dean of Stempel College. “This rise in the rankings is really attributed to them—they are what make this program what it is, and I am thrilled to see it getting the recognition it deserves.”

Stempel College offers public health degrees in BiostatisticsEnvironmental Health SciencesEpidemiologyHealth Promotion & Disease Prevention, and a generalist Online MPH.  

This fall, the college will launch its Master of Public Health (MPH) with a concentration in global health, a 45-credit degree that will train students on how to respond to the domestic and international health challenges of today and prepare for those that can impact populations in the future.

Stempel College also offers graduate degrees through its School of Social Work, the Department of Dietetics and Nutrition, and the Academy for International Disaster Preparedness.

This year’s new rankings add to Stempel College’s current rankings:

  • U.S. News & World Report ranks the Emergency Management program No. 9 among public and private universities.
  • Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research ranks Stempel College 12 among public schools for public health in National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding.
  • U.S. News & World Report lists the college’s Dietetics Major as No. 12 among public universities.
  • U.S. News & World Report ranks the social work graduate program in the top 100 among public and private universities.

U.S. News & World Report has been providing education rankings, which are used by parents and students to select schools, since 1983.
