Social workers go above and beyond for our communities. From providing mental health care to individuals and families to shaping our future leaders at schools, social workers are dedicated to building a better world for everyone.

This Social Work Month, FIU Stempel College honors its faculty and students who represent the values of the field and are making a positive impact in our communities.

Maximilano Cardoso, student in the Master’s in Social Work program, shares why he entered the field and how Stempel College has prepared him to be a future licensed clinical social worker.

What motivated you to pursue a degree/career in the social work field?

What motivated me to pursue a degree and career in the field of social work is the profound fulfillment I experience when helping others. During my time in the military, I first recognized this passion while mentoring new soldiers who had been stationed in unfamiliar states without the presence of family or a strong support system. I made it a priority to help fill that void by offering friendship, guidance, mentorship, and consistent support. Throughout this journey, my wife has also been a tremendous source of motivation and support, encouraging me to continue pursuing a career dedicated to helping others. Later, while working with veterans at the Miami VA, my commitment to service grew even stronger as I witnessed the complex challenges many veterans face. These experiences inspired me to pursue a career in social work so that I can further develop the professional skills, knowledge, and tools necessary to better support individuals and communities in need.

How has your journey in the field been like so far?

My journey in the field of social work has had its share of challenges and successes. Along the way, I have had the opportunity to work with various populations and continue developing my counseling skills through hands-on experience. At one point, policy changes caused a temporary halt in one of my internships. While difficult, that experience helped me recognize how important advocacy is in today’s world, especially for both clients and professionals in the field. Fortunately, the staff at Florida International University acted quickly and were able to place me in my current internship, where I continue to strengthen my social work skills and gain valuable experience serving others.

What has been a cool/rewarding experience from your time at the School of Social Work?

One of the most rewarding aspects of my time as a student in the School of Social Work has been the people I have been surrounded by. I have learned about the many different needs, experiences, and motivations that lead individuals to pursue a career in social work. Hearing these diverse perspectives has made the field even more meaningful and inspiring to me. Additionally, the faculty and staff have been incredibly supportive, providing guidance and encouragement throughout every step of the journey.

What is a piece of advice that you’d give to a prospective social work student?

One piece of advice I would give to a prospective social work student is to stay open-minded and remember why you chose this field in the first place. Social work can be challenging at times, but it is also incredibly rewarding. Take every opportunity to learn from your professors, peers, and the communities you serve. Each experience will help shape your perspective and strengthen your ability to support others. Most importantly, be patient with yourself as you grow because developing the skills needed to truly help people takes time, dedication, and compassion.

What are your next steps?

My next steps include beginning employment as a therapist at WestCare, where I am currently completing my internship. I plan to gain the required clinical experience over the next two years before taking the exam to become a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW). My goal is to continue supporting individuals in need within the community while growing professionally in the field of social work. At the same time, I hope to pass on the values that guide my work—empathy, compassion, and service—by teaching my children the importance of living a meaningful and joyful life while helping others.

What is something about the field that people don’t know about?

One thing people may not realize about the field of social work is just how broad it truly is. Social workers don’t only work in counseling settings—they can be found in hospitals, schools, the military, community organizations, and policy advocacy roles. Many people are surprised to learn that social workers often play a key role in shaping programs, connecting individuals to critical resources, and advocating systemic change. This diversity allows social workers to support individuals and communities in many different ways while addressing complex social issues.
