The world faces significant threats to human health. Climate change, an unprecedented crisis of Covid-19 and a rapidly growing array of non-communicable diseases are impacting vulnerable communities across the globe.
At the FIU Robert Stempel College of Public Health & Social Work in Miami, Florida, the Department of Global Health centers its work around research, innovation, and capacity strengthening to help support people affected by today’s global health challenges.
The Department of Global Health brings together collaborators from academia, government, the private sector and beyond to provide scientific solutions to the world’s population. The Department’s research and academic activities will also complement FIU’s new Population Health Institute to propel collaborative research on addressing health inequities, and to enhance capacity strengthening activities, both locally and globally.

Saving the Amazon in South America by a regional approach on climate change
In this position paper, researchers highlight the devastating impacts of climate change in the Amazon (and in South America region, by extension); but importantly, why health can be a critical component for: a) any region-wide strategic initiative to tackle the growing climate crisis, and b) serving as a lever to gain greater policy traction for necessary climate action.
This fall, FIU will launch its Master of Public Health (MPH) with a concentration in global health, a 45-credit degree that will train students on how to respond to the domestic and international health challenges of today and prepare for those that can impact populations in the future. 
Chair of Global Health to help strengthen global cancer prevention guidelines
The World Cancer Research Fund has selected Dr. Rajiv Chowdhury, chair of global health at the Robert Stempel College of Public Health & Social Work, to serve as the global representative on the Expert Panel for the Continuous Update Project.
New partnership with the School of Medicine at the Universidad de los Andes
Stempel College partners with the School of Medicine at Universidad de los Andes (Uniandes) in Colombia—the first FIU partnership of its kind to be established in the Latin American region.
