Master's of Public Health (MPH) with a Concentration in Brain, Behavior and the Environment

The Department of Environmental Health Sciences (EHS) offers a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree in EHS concentrations with two majors, 1) EHS, and 2) Brain, Behavior, and the Environment (BBE).  The department also offers a Graduate Certificate in Environmental Health Sciences (EHS).

The Brain, Behavior and the Environment (BBE) concentration is a rigorous program that emphasizes emerging themes in neuroscience, pharmacology, neurotoxicology, imaging, psychology and psychiatry, alongside environmental exposures to prepare students for medical, industrial, research, and government careers. The program provides students with the unique perspective of integrating environmental influences into understanding and combating complex neurobiological disorders.

This focus is officially recognized by FIU as an Emerging Preeminent Program and is taught by top researchers from Stempel College’s faculty roster.

Our research graduates have found opportunities in top-ranked medical schools, premier academic research institutions, government agencies, and in biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies.

Course Structure

  1. Public Health Core Courses: (15 Credits)
  2. Environmental Health Sciences Content Core Courses (12 Credits)
  3. Courses in the Practicum and Culminating Experience (6 Credits)
  4. BBE Concentration Coursework (12 Credits)

Practicum

The practicum may be taken after completing a minimum of 30 hours, including all core courses. The practicum may be waived if the student has at least three years of relevant practice experience working in a public health setting. The waiver request is prepared and submitted by the student through their faculty advisor and department chair. If the practicum requirement is waived, the student will need to substitute three additional approved hours so that the total curriculum hour requirement of 45 is met. MPH students are expected to complete PHC 6930C Integrative Seminar in Public Health during their last semester in the program.

  • Program Requirements

    Applicants must meet the following requirements:

    1. A minimum 3.0 GPA (on the last 60 undergraduate hours)
    2. Official University/ College transcript from all institutions previously attended. International documents, please read instructions listed in SOPHAS.
    3. Statement of Purpose
    4. Three (3) Letters of Recommendation
    5. Resume/CV
    6. English Language proficiency test is required for all international applicants unless they hold a degree from a US institution or from an institution within a country that is TOEFL-exempt.
      • Acceptable test scores: TOEFL (min. scores: 550 paper-based, 80 internet-based), IELTS (min. score of 6.5).
