School of Social Work
The social work profession is geared toward preventing and ameliorating social problems to enhance the quality of human life. Social work practice requires a high level of knowledge, dedication, scientific understanding of society and human behavior, which can be distilled into the transactions between people and their environments, and their ability to accomplish life tasks, alleviate distress and realize aspirations. Our graduates contribute to the knowledge base of social welfare, near and far, by learning to evaluate the effects of social welfare interventions at all levels throughout their education.
Accredited since 1974 by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), Stempel College’s School of Social Work offers programs of professional study to prepare graduates to work in governmental or non-profit settings, and in community, regional, state and national systems. Our programs put an emphasis on achieving a comprehensive, developmental and community-oriented understanding of the needs facing urban societies in rapidly changing social, political, economic and cultural conditions. We maintain partnerships with approximately 110 community agencies, including Baptist Health, Banyan Health, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Citrus Health and Camillus House.
Our students are repeatedly recognized for upholding the tenets of social work and for their outstanding commitment to community engagement. In 2017, the Phi Alpha Honor Society chapter at the School of Social Work received its 11th consecutive National Service Award from social work’s largest honor society. To see how our students perform, please review our student learning outcomes: BSSW assessment and MSW assessment.
