Dietetic Internship Application Information

Before you apply

The DI Program in the Department of Dietetics and Nutrition at FIU is an 8-month post-baccalaureate, non-degree-granting program. The DI program participates in the pre-select process. Students who have a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) verification statement, are admitted to one of the graduate programs (MS or PhD) in the department and have fulfilled the requirements for the graduate degree, may apply to the DI.

Before accessing the online FIU Dietetic Internship Application please gather the following documents. You will need to upload these materials as separate PDFs in the application:

Admission Criteria

The DI Program will consider students who have:

  • A DPD Verification Statement from an ACEND accredited DPD program
  • If a Declaration of Intent to complete an ACEND accredited DPD program is provided with the application, a verification statement will be required before the student can begin the internship.
  • Successfully completed the requirements for one of the two graduate programs (the master’s or doctorate program) in the Department of Dietetics and Nutrition at FIU.
  • Minimum of an overall graduate GPA 3.0 GPA at the time of application submission and at the start of the internship. If you have received lower than a C in any FIU undergraduate science course and DPD course or its transfer equivalent OR more than two grades of C+ in graduate courses, your application WILL NOT be considered.
  • Completed DI Program Application submitted by 5:00 pm (EST) on the first day of either spring or fall semesters. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.

Personal statement instructions

Provide a personal statement that includes the topics listed below for aspiring to become a Registered Dietitian and be selected for the FIU Dietetic Internship. This written statement will be evaluated for organization, content, individuality, spelling/grammar, connection to the profession of dietetics, and length/format. A maximum of two typed pages with 12 point font, 1.5 spacing, and 1” margins is required.

Letters of recommendation

Select two individuals to complete the Recommendation Online Forms. At least one should be able to evaluate your knowledge of dietetics and nutrition. The recommender may choose to upload a personal letter but the Recommendation Form Rating Checklist must be completed. If the reference includes a letter, the letter MUST be on official letterhead stationery. These persons should be familiar with your academic ability and work performance and cannot be related to you. The DI Director or the DI Admissions Committee members will not write letters or recommendations. You must consider the “visibility rights” of the letter prior to sending the Recommendation Links below:

Please select one of the following two options. After selecting the option below – send the corresponding recommendation form link to your recommender. Only references using the Recommendation Online Forms will be accepted by the committee. Please notes that all references must be completed by the application deadline.

  • I wish this letter to be confidential and waive my access rights granted by the above laws.

Criteria for selection of students

Applications are due in the Department of Dietetics and Nutrition by 5 pm on the assigned date must be submitted by the first day of the fall semester or the first day of the spring semester. Please refer to the University academic calendar for a specific date – no exceptions will be made.

The admission criteria are specified and weighted in the following point system.

    Note: The DI Program Director, Program Coordinator or Admissions’ Committee members will NOT write letters of recommendation for students applying to the program.
